Third graders created folded books in this project.  First they created the cover of their books by marbling matboard using shaving cream and liquid tempera paint.  They then folded one long piece of paper to create their pages.  When they glued their pages into their books, they also added a string to tie it shut.

Kindergarteners learned about African animals and the importance of animal styled masks in African culture.  They chose an animal from Africa for their masks that they created out of paper plates and construction paper.

Masquerade Masks 05/18/2011

First graders learned about the history of masquerade masks.  They then created their own out of paper plates!

2nd graders learned about warm and cool colors as they drew mythical birds.  When students colored their pictures, they had to choose one group of colors for their bird and the other group of colors for their background.

Easter Eggs 05/02/2011

In this project kindergarteners drew oval shapes as large as they could on a piece of paper.  After they cut out the shapes, they tore up tissue paper to glue onto it.  Once that dried, we talked about different kinds of lines.  They decorated their eggs by drawing these lines across them.  They turned out so cute!

The American Red Cross held a poster contest for students in grades K-3.  The students were asked to design posters that expressed the importance of seat belt safety.  One winner from each grade level was chosen.

We decided to take on this project in art class.  We talked about how to travel safely in cars and how to express those ideas on paper.

The Red Cross received over 600 entries from schools all over the area!  They said it was a tough job narrowing it down to only four winners, because there were so many fantastic artworks submitted.

I am excited to say that one of our very own second graders was chosen as a winner!  Her poster is pictured to the left, and there will be many more copies put out around the area during Child Passenger Safety Week!  We also had a runner up for the third grade level who received a certificate for his achievement.

Congratulations to our amazing Dee-Mack Primary Artists!!!

Pop Art Prints 04/05/2011

Third graders learned about Andy Warhol and pop art during this lesson.  They created their own stamps with styrofoam and printed them using rollers and tempera paint.

Value 03/23/2011

Value tells us how light or dark a color is.  Third grade students practiced making ranges of value as they filled in interesting spaces created by the shape of thier hands and straight lines.

Clay Animals 03/18/2011

After learning a few sculpting techniques, second graders created animals out of clay.  They were told that they could create any animal they wanted, and it had to have parts that stick out (legs, fins, etc.)  In other words, no snakes or worms!

It's that time of year again when I make the first graders sew pockets!  Students used plastic needles, yarn, and burlap to sew.  Once their pocket was complete, they used found materials (marker lids, Q-tips, wood pieces, etc) to stamp on designs and patterns.
